Why having abs probably won't make you any happier

It's always a hot topic among most women, we all want abs. There are countless amounts of advertisements for flat tummy teas and wraps, and most of us are all looking for the latest quick fix to help us fix our problem areas.

I had a flashback earlier this week to when I was a 15/16 year old girl rushing home to get in my workout straight after school. I would run down to my bedroom and find workout videos on Youtube, mainly consisting of ab routines. As teenagers we can feel so much pressure from our peers to always look good. I remember I would constantly look in the mirror at my stomach to see if I had that 'Tone line' down my stomach (hopefully you know what I'm talking about) and I was constantly disappointed when I didn't have the stomach of a Victoria Secret model.

Fast forward 5 years, now I do have that 'Tone line' and I do have abs. And guess what it didn't really make me any happier when I noticed it one day. Because the truth is you're always going to fixate over something. If it's not your thighs with cellulite it will be that your arms aren't toned enough or your thighs touch together. One day you might realise that you have achieved your 'dream body' but eventually you will find something to complain about because there will always be something you're not happy with if you don't learn to love and embrace your body just the way it is.

Comparing ourselves to others is something I'm sure we're all guilty of at one point in our lives. I know you've heard it all before but comparing your body to someone off Instagram isn't going to help you with loving your body. Instagram is a highlight reel, most photos are heavily edited and have been taken at the best possible angle and lighting and that's okay it's natural for us to want to showcase our best. But comparison only kills your confidence. I know this because it happens to me to.

Learning to love your body is not an easy journey, for me sometimes it comes in waves, one day I can feel full of confidence and the next day I hate every part about my body. This is usually reflected on how I treat my body. When I  have an off day and don't give my body the nutrients it deserves and don't move my body I will tend to have a negative body image. However, when I fuel my body with good nutrients, water and exercise I feel so good in my own body. My body may not have changed how it looks but I feel happier and more confident.

It's great to have fitness and body goals but it's even better to focus on how we feel, I think most people don't even know how it feels to be healthy. Most of us just get used to low energy levels, so getting into the habit of moving your body everyday, fueling your body with nutrient dense foods and water is all going to affect how we feel and how we feel about our bodies.

Having abs isn't going to make you a better person, feeling healthier and happier is going to make you a better person, there really is so much more to life than the way we look, when we're happier it's going to show in all aspects of life, physically, emotionally and mentally.

What are your thoughts?
